In diabetes, blood sugar is very high. The normal value is 120 mg/dl. In pregnant people, screening is being done to detect diabetes with the use of a 50 grams oral glucose challenge test. Those who have diabetic parents would undergo the test during their first prenatal check-up. However, those who have no risk or who have no diabetic parents would have to have the test at twenty four weeks of pregnancy. 50 grams of sugar would be ingested by the patient. Then, her blood would be extracted for the test.
The diabetes blood sugar is suspected if the value is more than 140 mg/dl. The patient would undergo the confirmative test which is the 100 grams oral glucose tolerance test. The diabetes blood sugar would be confirmed if two values were higher than normal. The mother would be checked twice a week for the fetal surveillance because the life of the baby is being endangered by the rising blood sugar. Further sophisticated ultrasound tests would be requested to note if the baby is all right inside the mother's wound. Folic acid supplementation would be given continuously to help in the development of the organs. Hopefully, it could also help in the prevention of congenital abnormalities.
Prevention of diabetes in pregnancy could be very difficult because of the condition of the mother. What could only be done is frequent monitoring of the well-being of both mother and child. Other relatives significant to the patient should be very supportive. They encourage the patient to have the glucose tests and the observance of proper diet. Patient and relatives should also be aware that anytime, the baby could suffer if the diabetic blood sugar could not be controlled so that they would be psychologically prepared for the dire possible neonatal outcome of the diabetes in pregnancy.
Though there is a few more reason other than diabetes which leads to the increase of blood sugar level, the primary cause of increased blood sugar continues to be diabetes. The very basic things that could keep diabetes in check is having a proper an balanced diet and never allowing overeating. The level of activity in humans should be increased by going out to the gymnasium, doing various types of exercises etc. Smoking and drinking should be completed prevented to stay alive from this dangerous disease. Apart from that, medicines as prescribed by one's doctor should never be neglected. That is the key to maintain healthy even after showing symptoms of diabetes.
